What Is Sales Tax?

Sales tax is a percentage added to the price of goods or services at the time of purchase. The percentage varies by region, state, province, or country.

When you add sales tax, you calculate the tax on the pre-tax price and then add it to the original amount. When you reverse sales tax, you start with the final total and work backward to separate the tax from the pre-tax price.

The Sales Tax Formula

Sales Tax = Price × (Tax Rate ÷ 100)
Total Price = Price + Sales Tax
Pre-Tax Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + Tax Rate ÷ 100)

Step-by-Step Calculation

  1. Enter the pre-tax price or total price.
  2. Convert the tax rate to a decimal by dividing by 100.
  3. For adding tax, multiply the price by the tax rate decimal to find the tax amount.
  4. Add that tax amount to the original price to get the final total.
  5. For reversing tax, divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate decimal to find the pre-tax amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price before tax by the sales tax rate divided by 100. Then add that tax amount to the original price.
What is the formula for total price with sales tax?
Total price equals pre-tax price plus sales tax. Another way to write it is price × (1 + tax rate ÷ 100).
How do I remove sales tax from a total price?
Divide the total price by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. That gives you the pre-tax price.
What is 8% tax on $100?
$8.00 in tax, making the final total $108.00.
What is 5% tax on $50?
$2.50 in tax, making the final total $52.50.
How do I calculate the total price after tax?
First find the tax amount, then add it to the pre-tax price. The result is the final price after tax.
Can I use a custom sales tax rate?
Yes. Enter any tax percentage you need, including local or combined rates.
Why does reverse sales tax use division instead of subtraction?
Because the tax was originally added as a percentage of the pre-tax price. To undo that correctly, you divide by 1 plus the tax rate decimal.
What is the pre-tax price if the total is $110 with 10% tax?
The pre-tax price is $100, and the tax included is $10.
Is sales tax the same everywhere?
No. Sales tax rates vary by state, province, region, and country.
Can this calculator be used for invoices and receipts?
Yes. It works for retail purchases, invoices, receipts, and budgeting calculations.
