How Grade Percentages Work
A grade percentage is your score expressed as a proportion of the total marks available. It allows fair comparison across different assessments regardless of the maximum points used.
For example, 38 out of 50 and 76 out of 100 both equal 76%. That means the performance is equivalent even though the raw scores are different.
The Grade Percentage Formula
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Take the score achieved.
- Divide it by the total points possible.
- Multiply by 100 to convert the decimal into a percentage.
- Match the result to the grade scale to find the letter grade.

- D: 60–69% — Below average, passing in many systems

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing weighted and unweighted grades: If assessments carry different weights, a simple percentage may not match the true course grade.
- Using the wrong total: Always divide by the total for that assignment, quiz, or exam.
- Rounding too early: Keep the decimal during calculation and round only the final answer.
- Ignoring grading policy differences: Some schools use plus/minus scales or custom cutoffs.
