If you want an accurate estimate for a paint job, the math has to reflect what you’re actually painting. Paint coverage is shaped by area, number of coats, and your paint’s actual specs—which might not always match the label. In construction, a calculated estimate lets you budget both time and money and can avoid guessing on the next trip to the store.

The working principle is simple: you get the paintable area, then divide by the product’s stated coverage per gallon. Most interior paints say 350–400 sq ft per gallon, but that’s on a flat, smooth and non-porous surface—which is rare in reality. Porous or rough surfaces can throw the expected numbers off quite a bit.

The surface texture and prep matter much more than people expect. New drywall, bare wood, or concrete will drink up the first coat compared to something already painted. In practice, I’d use 250–300 sq ft/gallon as a coverage figure for unsealed or thirsty surfaces.
