Wire-Drawing Machine: Animation and Equal-Pass Reduction Calculator

← Back to Engineering Library

Wire drawing reduces cross-sectional area through a sequence of dies. This calculator distributes the entered total area ratio equally across an entered die count.

Wire-drawing Machine Interactive Calculator

Enter entry/final diameters, die count, yield reference and stress at 25% reduction. Geometry is exact for circular diameters; stress and margin are screening assumptions.

Equation Used

A=pi D^2/4; total reduction=100(1-Af/A0); per pass=100(1-(Af/A0)^(1/n)); estimated stress=s25(per-pass/25); margin=Sy/stress.
The linear stress scaling is declared and does not include strain hardening, friction, die angle, back tension, temperature or redundant work.
  • Wire sections are circular.
  • Every pass uses the same area ratio.
  • Diameters and die count are entered independently.
  • Stress scales linearly from the entered 25% reference.
  • Drawing force, friction, die geometry, hardening and heat are omitted.

Equal-Ratio Drawing Passes

The animation shows a circular wire stepping through equal area-ratio dies.

What This Calculator Represents

Area-reduction geometry plus a declared linear stress screen.

Area-Reduction Equations

r=Af/A0
Rpass=100(1-r^(1/n))
Rtotal=100(1-r)

Worked Scenario

The default 2.05 mm to 0.8 mm schedule is divided into 13 equal area-ratio passes.

Model Boundary

No drawing load, die pressure, hardening curve, friction, heat or process qualification is calculated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are diameter reductions equal?

No; area ratios are equal.

No; it is a declared linear screen.

Is yield margin a safety factor?

No.

Are die angles included?

No.

Is friction included?

No.

Can this qualify a draw schedule?

No.
