Spiral Guide on Disk (drilling Feed) Mechanism: How the Archimedean Face Cam Drives Quill Feed

← Back to Engineering Library

An ideal Archimedean guide has radius r=r₀+(p/2π)θ, so its radial increment is p per complete disk turn. With a separately selected ideal reduction G spindle turns per disk turn, the radial increment per spindle turn is p/G.

Equation Used

r−r₀=pN; Δr/spindle rev=p/G; θ=2πN.
Selected kinematic ledger only; groove offset, follower geometry, pressure angle, reversal, loads and machining suitability are not predicted.
  • The selected guide is an ideal Archimedean spiral with constant radial pitch p.
  • G is a selected ideal count of spindle turns per disk turn.
  • N is accumulated disk turns from a selected reference, not a repeating cam cycle.
  • The fit flag uses râ‚€=0 and disk radius D/2 only as an explicit construction check.
  • Roller radius, groove width, offset, pressure angle, reversal, loads, backlash and cutting conditions are excluded.

Former quill-feed claims are narrowed to selected radial increments because the source does not define a quill coupling or complete groove envelope.

Same mechanism and inputs as the interactive calculator.

Selected groove construction

The plot uses râ‚€=0 only as a disclosed construction origin and marks the selected endpoint after N disk turns. A radial follower in a real face groove needs finite roller width, clearance, guides and a return/reversal strategy.

What the calculator determines

Select disk diameter, Archimedean radial pitch, ideal spindle-to-disk reduction and accumulated disk turns. The calculator reports selected radial increment, radial increment per spindle turn, corresponding spindle turns and radial gain per radian.

Selected kinematic ledger

r−r₀=(p/2π)θ=pN; spindle turns=GN; radial increment per spindle turn=p/G.

Selected-input example

At p=10 mm/rev, G=20 spindle rev/disk rev and N=1 disk turn, the selected radial increment is 10 mm, the spindle count is 20 rev and the ideal increment is 0.5 mm per spindle rev.

Kinematic schedule, not drill-feed design

The disk diameter is used only for an explicit geometric fit check against radius D/2. Actual feed requires a defined starting radius, usable groove band, roller offset, pressure angle, reversal/dwell law, structural stiffness, backlash, speed, load and lubrication. No quill coupling or cutting feed is sized here.

Questions

Why can the selected endpoint exceed the disk?

The source input ranges allow pN>D/2. The arithmetic remains visible, but the diagram flags that the selected zero-origin construction does not fit.

Is p/G a cutting feed recommendation?

No. It is only the selected ideal radial increment per spindle turn.
