Spanish Barton (form 1) Mechanism Explained: 5:1 Compound Pulley Diagram, Parts and Uses

← Back to Engineering Library

This partial calculator keeps only ideal supporting-part and work arithmetic. It does not identify or reconstruct a Spanish Burton form because the exact independent-rope routing, terminations, moving bodies, sheaves, segment tensions, splay and anchor reactions are not defined.

Equation Used

MA=N; F=mg/N; haul=Nh; ideal work=mgh.
Ideal equal-tension lossless part-count ledger only; no reeving, efficiency, splay or anchor model.
  • N is a user-selected abstract supporting-part count.
  • Supporting parts are ideal, vertical and equal-tension.
  • The model is lossless and obeys conservation of work.
  • Rope routing, terminations, moving sheaves, friction, splay, anchor reactions, dynamics and safety factors are excluded.

The secondary figure is a parallel-line tally, not a rope path.

Same mechanism and inputs as the interactive calculator.

Supported ideal supporting-part arithmetic

For an explicitly selected count N of equal-tension vertical supporting parts in an ideal lossless model, ideal mechanical advantage is N, ideal pull force is mg/N, ideal haul length for lift h is Nh and ideal input work equals mgh.

This is an abstract work ledger, not a reeving diagram or a claim that the named tackle has N supporting parts.

Use and boundary

Use the ledger to understand ideal supporting-part count and conservation of work. Do not use it to determine a real Spanish Burton pull, efficiency, splay correction, anchor load or safety factor.

Ideal lossless identities

MA_ideal=N; F_ideal=mg/N; haul=N h; work=F haul=mgh.

Default selected-value example

For m=270 kg, h=1 m and selected N=3, ideal pull is about 882.6 N, ideal haul length is 3 m and ideal input work is about 2647.8 J.

Unsupported tackle claims removed

The former fixed 5:1 label, global efficiency multiplier, cosine splay correction and anchor-load multiplier were removed. Historical sources distinguish single and double Spanish Burton configurations, so exact reeving must be established before naming a real advantage.

Questions

Does N identify a Spanish Burton?

No. It is an abstract selected supporting-part count.

Are real rope tensions equal?

Not necessarily; sheave friction and routing can produce unequal tensions.

Is anchor load calculated?

No.
